SUPER GRAVITY
newsreader
Years ago I went through a stack of Usenet newsreaders trying to find the best one. I used to use Forte Agent. Then, I found Gravity (which I still use). I had a look at others, including XNews, but they were all pretty much shite. XNews' author was a complete twat, as I found out when I sent him some suggestions to improve his program. "That isn't what it's meant for." "That's not what I want this program to do." Anyway, Gravity remained the best newsreader around. Unfortunately, the companies who distributed Gravity (Anawave, then Microplanet) went out of business. BUT! The original author has re-released Gravity, now titled Super Gravity, as freeware! You need the original installation package (which you can download from the SG homepage) - then just extract the new executable. It's being constantly updated again. This program has so many features that I'm not even going to list them here - check out some screenshots to whet your appetite - HERE, HERE and HERE. Other screenshots can be found on the homepage.

(14-Apr-2002)
MILKDROP.CO.UK
support website
If you use MilkDrop (a psychedelic visualisation plugin for WinAMP) then you HAVE to visit this site. MilkDrop allows you to use presets which generate real wacky visuals when listening to your favourite MP3s/MPCs. This site has over a thousand of them. There are two kinds of people in this world - normal folk, and those who zone out watching screensavers, eye-candy such as MilkDrop or Norton Speed Disk defragmenting their boot partition. If you belong to the latter, check out this link. For the ultimate mental and visual high, listen to C64 music using this plugin.
(27-Apr-2002)
This guy's homepage gets a mention on my site mainly due to his dedication to "writing small utilities for various purposes and improving on other people's work by attempting to write smaller and faster code. This is in contrast to bloatware - the gigantic, unreliable offerings so common in commercial and shareware software these days." There are also some nice apps on there, including a fully functional CD player program in 5k (!) and a network shared resource scanner which is 11k.

KASPERSKY ANTIVIRUS PRO
antivirus software
Kaspersky AntiVirus has been around for ages, and in my opinion (which is virtually the only opinion you'll ever get on this website) it's the best - I've been burned by McAfee once before when it failed to detect the CIH virus a few years ago, and Symantec/Norton is all bloatware these days (just look what they did to AtGuard!) KAV kicks serious arse and this is their latest version, which intercepts email viruses, macro viruses, basically any virus you'll ever get. Plus they have daily regular updates. Get this and flick Vet, Norton, or any other killer you have.
(3-Feb-2002)
BLINDWRITE SUITE
cd burning software
So last month I was raving about CloneCD. This month the tide has changed and I'm all for Blindwrite. It features a special hardware CD access layer (a la ASPI) called the Patin-Couffin driver. It claims to be the most robust engine for "perfect" reproduction of copy-protected CDs, or CDs with weak sectors etc. Quite a nice interface, two separate programs (BlindRead and BlindWrite), multiple read and write modes - you could well say that CDRWin (and CloneCD) are now things of the past. Click HERE and HERE for screenshots.

WORLD TIME
multiple timezone clock
Hunting for a better multi-zone clock than EldoS Pads, I stumbled across this beauty. It does pretty much everything that Pads does, and although a little bulkier, it's freeware and definitely worth checking out. It has a cool rotatable globe showing the geographical locations of the cities that your clocks are set to, a decent on-screen display, MANY options and timezones to choose from, can sync to an NTP timeserver, chime in heaps of weird and wonderful ways (ship's bells, etc), download a list of latest city locations from the web, minimize to systray, calculate what time it will be in one city when you give it the time in another, has a calendar and Date Traqer, a stopwatch, a DST manager and more.

FRESH DIAGNOSE
stats/diagnostics/benchmark
First time I've recommended this sort of program. Hrm. Shows joo everything whut's in jo' computer - CPU speed, memory size, hard drive capacity, blah blah. Plus does benchmarks.. and wouldn't you know it, it'll even tell you how many "dhrystones" your computer is packing! Freeware.
(15-Feb-2002)
I never could have imagined how much crap they'd throw into a program designed to reduce the size of your .JPG files while still maintaining acceptable quality! This program is very slick and does it all. And I mean *ALL*. You only need to look at a shot of the main screen to see what I mean. You can independantly control the Chroma and Luma compression, save out compression profiles.. look, I would even suggest downloading it just to see the totally wanked-out progress animation as it performs a batch compression! The perfect companion program for those with 3.2+ megapixel digital cameras who'd like to save a little room on their hard drives. Like me. "With 40Gb, who cares?" I have 150Gb. *I* care.

CLONE-CD
cd burning software
The other day, I was trying to make a simple 1-to-1 copy of a CD and realised that it was actually somewhat of a chore to do this with Nero. I've read people's comments about CloneCD and looked at it months ago, yet never thought it was special. Well, it's pretty cool. You can copy CDs to a file, or to another CD (with one drive), and erase CD-RWs. That's about it. The interface is simple, elegant and functional. It appears to be one of the best CD duper available, if you just want something to copy data or audio cds.
(6-Jan-2002)
MP3 RENATAGER
mp3 file renamer
As usual, I've been experimenting and comparing and lately it's been with MP3 encoders. I've wound up with a load of MP3s without ID3 tags and wanted a quick and dirty program to automagically create the tags for me based on the album name I gave it as well as the filenames of the MP3s. This program does all that and more; as its name suggests, it's an MP3 renamer and ID3 tagger. Find a list of stuff it does, and some screenshots, here. Freeware.
(6-Jan-2002)
ICON PHILE
icon utility
Icon Phile is a small, single-exe icon and cursor customisation utility. You can change all your desktop folders and system tool icons (Recycle Bin, My Briefcase, etc), doctype icons (ZIP, RAR etc) and cursors, as well as saving customisation "presets" so you can bulk-change to a new icon set with one click, and more. A very cool little program. Click HERE for some screenshots. Freeware.
(6-Jan-2002)
DVD PROFILER
dvd cataloguing tool
Okay, anyone with even a halfway-decent DVD collection HAS to get this program. The company who makes the software maintains a giant DVD database online; scanned covers, actor details, price details and HEAPS more. The first time you run DVD Profiler it will link up online and download some master database lists. Then, you simply enter the barcode number off the cover of each of your DVDs one by one and presto. You can keep track of who you lent the DVDs to, where and when you bought it, and even maintain an online list which you can update in seconds. Check out my list here! Then go download the program - this one definitely gets three thumbs up.

GOLD LACE
screensaver
Yet another funky screensaver. It reminds me of the Psychedelic Screensaver as it generates random patterns and proceeds to colour-cycle them. Fairly cute eye-candy.
(27-Jan-2002)
DL EXPERT
download manager
This program is quite similar to FlashGet, not as many features but works just as well and is freeware. It does all the usual stuff; failsafe downloading of files from ftp:// and http:// URLs, download scheduling, hangup after downloading, save files in different directories according to extension, proxy support, drag-and-drop download "box" etc. If you don't want to pay cash for FlashGet, this is your alternative and a bloody good one too.
(27-Jan-2002)
VCOOL
cpu cooler
Most people use CPUCool. I never liked it, the interface was too clunky and I HATE crap that's badly translated from German - "forced cooing", "programm launch" etc. But I digress. This program is freeware, tiny and IMO heaps better than CPUCool. Essentially it throws your CPU into special idle modes (at a CPU level as well as controlling the PCI bus) which make it do less work and thus it runs cooler. It's specially designed for Athlon and Duron CPUs but I'm sure it works on Pentiums too. Frankly, whether or not it works on Pentiums doesn't really bother me since at the moment the only machine that's overheating round here is my bloody Athlon. Click HERE for a screenshot of the options screen. BTW, this program is less than 100k.

REAL-DRAW PRO
graphics editing suite
This is an extremely comprehensive 2D/3D drawing and editing package. Where do I begin? It has SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) support, PhotoShop plugin compatibility, 3D effects (bevel, glow, dropshadow etc), layers, exports to JPG, BMP, PNG, PSD and it's own E-JPG (Editable JPEG!) format as well as being able to use "export plugins" - there's stacks more that it can do, I actually think this is better than PhotoShop 6 and ten times easier to use! This program is the big brother of CompactDraw, which I used to design my main "Dhryland" logo. You MUST get Real-Draw, it is absolutely fantastic.
(4-Nov-2001)
1-4A RENAME
file renamer
This is a freeware file renamer with a stack of options. Apart from the fact that it doesn't actually appear to be able to SAVE your configuration (!), it's pretty cool. Not as good as The Rename, but worth a mention simply because one of its features is a Star Trek stardate/time option.. click HERE for a screenshot. Okay, I was kidding about the Star Trek thing, but the screenshot will show you why I like it. Freeware.
(4-Nov-2001)
DIVX 4
video codec + player
You've probably heard of DivX. To quote from the website: DivX compression technology is a software application that compresses digital video so it can be downloaded over DSL or cable modems in a relatively short time with no reduced visual quality. It's basically a dramatic upgrade to MPEG video and is therefore quite cool. Freeware.

ZOOMPLAYER

ZoomPlayer is a small but quite comprehensive video/DVD player. It uses DirectShow to play standard media and pre-installed DirectShow DVD filters to play DVD content. And it's skinnable. Click HERE or HERE for screenshots. Freeware.
(4-Nov-2001)
MPEGPLUS
audio compression tool
Why on earth would you want to compress your CD audio into anything other than MP3 format? Well, for a start, you should know that MP3 is a lossy format - the resultant audio is highly compressed and has frequencies removed based on a psychoacoustic model - basically, the software works out how much you need to hear from the original music. MPEGPlus is a lossy MP3-like encoder with comparable size to MP3 but far better frequency response and quality, so for all my GOOD stuff I now use MP+ as my encoder of choice. Obviously it's nonstandard, but so is most of the stuff I review here. You'll need a plugin to play these files in WinAMP. It's a command-line encoder, but EAC supports it so knock yourself out. Freeware. BTW, check out what audio guru Maz has to say about MPEGPlus here.
(11-Nov-2001)
BITBEAMER
ftp/mp3 sharing client
BitBeamer is the latest incarnation of the discontinued FTP client LeechFTP. It has been seriously overhauled - apart from all the good old features of LeechFTP such as multithreaded file transfers and queuing, it has new stuff like an MP3 sharing client (OpenNap-style), shell integration, automatic testing of downloaded ZIP/RAR/ACE archives for corruption, browser integration with HTTP download capability and "link leech" mode, file transfer speed throttling, integrated FTPsearch and heaps more. It has a slightly unusual interface but I found that it actually works quite well. Definitely worth checking out. Click HERE for some screenshots.

EDITOR²
text editor
Firstly, it's under 100k. Got your attention? This is a neat replacement for the Windows Notepad. Features include "autotext" (kind of a mini-macro), configurable fixed AND proportional fonts, find and replace, document stats, .. actually, there's not a heck of a lot to it, but it's perfect for associating .txt, .nfo, .log, .xml and .ini files to. Saves window position and settings. Oh, and you can configure different background colours for read-only and non-read-only files. And it loads FAST. Freeware.

EMLITH
tetris game
YEARS ago (back in the days of Windows 3.1) I played a neat shareware Tetris game called Emlith, which to this very day I've thought of as being the simplest but best implementation of Tetris on Windows. Recently I was thinking about the game and decided to check on the web to see if there were any newer versions of it. Lo and behold, it's been updated and is now freeware. I cannot think of a better game to just quickly load up and play whenever. The window is resizable and all the things you'd expect to be configurable, are. I love it! Click HERE or HERE for screenshots. Freeware.

FEURIO!
audio cd burning utility
This is a pretty comprehensive CD burning program, but it's strictly for burning audio. It has a built-in track editor, the ability to decode MP3s on-the-fly while burning (just drag them into your project and Feurio! will calculate the tracklength etc. automagically), a cover-editor, CDDB access capability, and more. If you make a lot of audio CD compilations to listen to in your car, Discman etc then you should check this out. (Thanks to QRK for recommending this program.)

TRANSPARENT
icon tool
I had previously been using Invisible! 2001. Not a bad program, but this one's 25k and does much the same thing. If you have a colourful desktop then check this program out - it turns the background of the actual text of your icons transparent - the effect is purely aesthetic. Can be made memory resident with a command-line switch and uses almost no CPU time. Freeware.
(02-07-2001)
WHERE IS IT?
cataloguing tool
This is an extremely comprehensive cataloguing utility. The functionality revolves around "plugins". There are plugins which do just about everything - read MP3 ID tags, examine the contents of ZIP files, contact the CDDB to read a compact disc's track names and heaps more. The idea is that you have a generic program to catalogue everything from files on your hard drive right through to your CD collection and beyond. It's very polished as well. Don't know why I hadn't stumbled on it sooner! Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.
(01-07-2001)
TMPG ENCODER
movie file encoder
Since we've recently bought a rather nice digital camcorder, I've been getting into the video stuff a little lately. This is a really cool freeware (mostly) util which does several things. Primarily, it encodes AVIs into MPG files. There's a heck of a lot of options, though. The quality of compression, variable versus constant bitrate, brightness, audio volume and dozens of other parameters can be set. It's quite a program - click HERE or HERE for screenshots. Recommended by Mister E! Freeware.
(01-07-2001)
AQUA-3D
screensaver
Yet another OpenGL 3D screensaver. With fish! If you're a screensaver junkie like me, this is well worth a look - it impresses everyone who sees it. You can opt to have a standard fishtank as a backdrop, or even "snapshot" your desktop so the fish swim across your screen. Click HERE for a screenshot. Yes, that's my desktop. And yes, the animation includes concentric ripples.
(01-07-2001)
UNITED DEVICES
distributed computing client
First they wanted you to waste CPU power cracking RC5-56bit DES encryption. Then RC5-64bit encryption. Then you got the opportunity to help compute Optimal Golomb Rulers! Next came SETI, which gave the vaguest semblance of being a useful thing to contribute to. YAWN. Want to help find a cure for cancer? And maybe win cash prizes as well? The UD agent uses idle CPU time on your machine and helps to determine positive interactions between antigen molecules and proteins known to be involved in the spread of cancer. Join my team Miskatonic IT at the UD homepage if you like. There is absolutely nothing in this for me if you do and there are no catches. You just get to use your idle CPU time to help make a difference to world health. Freeware.

Okay, so I'm screensaver crazy. But this one is really cool! It shows a 3D underwater scene with jellyfish, sharks, manta rays, schools of tropical fish and other fancy stuff such as waving seaweed etc. Unfortunately, as usual with screensavers from GizmoZone it takes a VERY long time to start the saver - and the music decompresses to over 20Mb!!! God knows how they think they can get away with a a >20Mb footprint for a screensaver. Anyway, just do what I did and delete the .DAT files once it's installed.

CUTEFTP PRO
ftp utility

CuteFTP has always been a pretty good FTP program, but it lacked certain features for years. Until now, that is. The new version allows site-to-site (FXP) transfers and multithreaded downloads/browse sessions. The screen layout is very user-friendly, it has a pretty good queue window (similar to BPFTP) and it even supports SSH2 SecureFTP mode! There's a LOT more options too. If the author includes a directory tree view option, this program will get my vote as the best FTP program currently available.

(8-04-2001)
WINIMP
file archiver

I had examined IMP a couple of years ago. It wasn't bad then and it's gotten better since. Basically, it's a file compressor similar to WinZIP and WinRAR. But it's freeware now. It incorporates some pretty efficient compression algorithms, an SFX-creator and a simple, easy-to-use interface. Plus, it decodes ZIP, GZIP, RAR, TAR, ARJ, BZIP2, UU and MIME formats. Worth a look.

BEARSHARE
file sharing client

BearShare is one of those peer-to-peer file sharing server/client combos that have become so popular recently. It sports a very polished GUI with plenty of nice touches including tiny flag icons indicating a host's country, a comprehensive bandwidth monitoring screen with ping- and pong-throttling for connections with limited bandwidth (ie, mine!) and plenty more. Better than Napster, and it's freeware. Click HERE and HERE for screenshots.

INTRANET CHAT
network chat tool

I stumbled across this freeware util while looking for an easy way to send a URL to my girlfriend (whose computer is just behind me) while we both surf the Net. It's pretty cool and would work real well in a large intranet. It's essentially a small chat client, but with heaps of features - users have their own message board and can initiate private chats, URLs automatically become working hyperlinks, and users can set themselves "away", similar to ICQ. It even turns ASCII smileys into graphic ones! () Click HERE and HERE for screenshots.

This is a tiny utility which forces your CD to read at a particular speed, and can also change its timeout before it spins down. Freeware. Click HERE for a screenshot.

(18-03-2001)
DREMPELS
screensaver

Many people know the Geiss Screensaver; that goofy, badly-programmed eye-candy which "synchronised" with your audio CDs to create swirling, hypnotic patterns on your screen. I never really liked it (since it never "synchronised" with my Yanni collection), but I like this. It's an almost intolerably large download at 5.8Mb, but it does what I've never seen since I ran Linux and X-Windows - it creates an animated backdrop to your desktop itself. This has got to be seen to be believed. Woefully unoptimized code, but let me just repeat - you've got to see this. Freeware. Tried to get a screenshot but I couldn't.

(11-03-2001)
IP2
ip address util

It's small (13k), it's fairly useful, and that's why it's here. It shows your current LAN IP and then snoops a bunch of internet hosts in order to determine your external IP. That's all. Use it in place of WinIPCFG. <lament> I love machine code - why can't EVERYONE learn to write in it? </lament>

(10-03-2001)
AD-MUNCHER
browser addon
Okay, everyone hates those popup windows, banner ads and other crap that you're constantly bombarded with whilst browsing. Ad-Muncher is a tiny (ca. 50k, 100% machine code) but powerful util that runs alongside your browser and works to remove these and other annoyances such as embedded MIDI files, OnUnload javascript commands, status bar scrollers and more. I can't believe it does so much and it's so small - obviously it ain't written in VB! Icing on the cake - it kicks in when you run your browser and automatically shuts itself down when your browser closes. Very cool indeed.
(04-03-2001)
MAD PLUGIN
winamp input plugin
If you're a music purist (as much as one can be when listening to MP3s), then you should download and install this plugin right away. It replaces the standard in_mp3.dll WinAMP MP3 input plugin to provide much-improved sound quality. If your soundcard has a 24-bit DAC (SB Live's do not) the output will be even better. This does all sorts of nifty dithering and high-performance MP3 decoding to give you the absolute best sound reproduction on playback. Plus, it shows much better MP3 info screens - click here, here & here for screenshots. Freeware.
(04-03-2001)
Retro musicians only! This website contains links to heaps of cool software for editing, composing and playing HSC, RAD, AdLib and other cool PC FM-synthesis modules. Warning - MP3s these ain't! *8-)

NERO BURNING ROM
cd burning software
I should have written this one up months ago. It's a brilliant CD burning utility. It does way too much stuff to go into in too much detail, but here's a taster: it can create audio/data/mixed-mode CDs, VCDs and SVCDs, hybrid (MAC/PC combo) CDs, supports multiple languages, supports overburning, support CDDB lookups, has a built-in CD jacket composer, supports direct MP3 -> CD decoding and writing on-the-fly, supports on-the-fly WAV audio filters (declick, hiss reduction, echoing etc) and has a very cool interface - click here or here for screenshots. Best of breed, and worth downloading now.

EXACT AUDIO COPY
cd ripper & mp3 encoder
You know, this is so typical of me. A few days after I start using one program, I find one that's better and switch over. I've swapped from using CDex to EAC. This ripper appears to have quite a following! It supports "secure" ripping modes, including "Accurate Stream" and "C2 Error Reporting" technology. Sounds like a wank? Well, it works. It does normalising. It supports external MP3 encoders (as well as Ogg Vorbis, which nobody seems to use but which I decided to mention anyway). It's got stacks more options. And it's freeware. Bugger CDex, just use this sucker and L.A.M.E. (-v --vbr-mtrh -q0 -ma %s %d) and you'll create some damn fine MP3's. To quote myself: "go rip some music."
(17-02-2001)
X-SETUP
system config. tweaker
This is a heck of a comprehensive program. It allows you to change, tweak, modify and fiddle hundreds of settings on your machine that you normally can't get to. It's based on plugins, and with it you can change virtually anything from the colours of your BSOD through enabling/disabling load balancing for Win2K/NT systems with two network cards. Too comprehensive to discuss further, go grab it now. Freeware. Click HERE for a screenshot. Beta version here.
(17-02-2001)
L.A.M.E
mp3 encoder
L.A.M.E. is an enhancement of the ISO MP3 encoder source which creates (according to psychotic German music guru 'Maz') arguably the highest quality MP3 files of any encoder. See what's so cool about it here. Now go rip some music. Don't bother if you don't have a good sound system or GREAT headphones though, ok? Freeware.
(09-02-2001)
TINY PERSONAL FIREWALL
personal firewall
Geez. It's certainly been a long time since I saw a firewall which came even close to being as good as AtGuard, but this one comes MIGHTY close. It doesn't do ad-blocking, but if you're after a damn good firewall which is FREE (for personal use) then this one will do you nicely. GRC's Shields Up! site advised that my computer was entirely stealthed when I ran TPF. This is a good thing. TPF has an interactive rule agent, similar to AtGuard's. It even features a port monitor so you can see suspect activity in realtime. If you don't run AtGuard, run this. And don't even think about running ZoneAlarm, it's for mindless twits.
(07-02-2001)
CDEX
cd ripper & mp3 encoder
CDex is a pretty cool program which you can use to rip all your favourite CDs into MP3s. Actually, it's one of the best I've seen. It supports CDDB (of course), plus a stack of external compressors, like the famous L.A.M.E. Actually, that's mainly why I use it. Freeware.
(04-02-2001)
GORT'S ICONS
icon compilation
Yet another collection of really neat-looking icons. These ones aren't so much computer-oriented as.. well, "fun". Check out the page, you'll see what I mean. Good for defining the icon on your computer which references your girlfriend's machine across your lame home network, for example (poker-faced expression).

(26-01-2001)
This is a pretty cool freeware MIDI player. It has some interesting functions such as a scrolling karaoke display (did you know that some MIDI files have lyrics embedded into them?), the ability to change the tempo of the song, and it's skinnable. Check it out.

LEAKTEST
firewall tester
Steve Gibson's been doing more research on firewalls, and he's released a free new program designed to test your system's security. He claims that only ZoneAlarm defeats this, but AtGuard works splendidly too. I HATE ZoneAlarm. Anyway, I advise you also to sign onto his mailing list as well, this guy is very well-respected in the Internet community and definitely has a clue about stuff. Don't forget about his online firewall tester, Shields Up!
(07-01-2001)
COOLPLAYER
MP3 player
So you use WinAMP or Apollo (only prime wankers use Sonique *8-) Well, here's an MP3 player which 1) is smaller and therefore loads up quicker, 2) is skinnable and 3) uses less CPU power playing MP3s. It's worth checking out - doesn't have as many features as the opposition but it's definitely got its good points. The skins are pretty far out too. Click HERE for a screenshot. Freeware.

OPERA
web browser

The new Opera's out, and it's a bloody bonza ripper, mate. Etc. v5 is finally advertising-supported freeware (don't worry, you can still pay for the non-banner version) and has heaps of enhancements including, but not limited to: a built-in instant messenger client (ICQ!), searching the web from a field contained in each Opera window (extremely handy), auto-page-reload (it'll refresh any webpage for you once every x minutes), native Java support, a fully-featured email client, an MDI window selector-bar, a 'presentation mode' which works like a Powerpoint slideshow for web pages, and the ability to resume transfers (highly cool). This is a phenomenal program, I guarantee that if you play with this browser for a little while, you'll see why it takes a dump on IE and Netscape from a great height!

This is an OpenGL screensaver with some absolutely SPECTACULAR effects. It's actually an advert for http://www.GizmoZone.com which is a website dedicated to neat things like desktop themes, screensavers and more. Okay, I'm on another 'kick'. This time it's screensavers. Quantum Galaxy is another OpenGL screensaver (obviously I have an OpenGL card *8-) It's only 44k and it has some rather nice, colourful particle effects. Not as crash-hot as Voodoo Lights, but it sure as heck ain't nowhere near the size either!

PHOTOBRUSH
graphics editor
This is an absolutely spectacular multipurpose graphic editor. It has HEAPS of stuff including (deep breath): image manipulation tools, digital camera photo touchup tools (redeye reduction, 'clean skin', remove scratches), painting and drawing tools (texture painting, artistic, natural, 3D brushes), Adobe PhotoShop filter support, TWAIN32 scanner support, brush libraries, rendered text with 3D and dropshadow, seamless texture support, special effect tools (lensflare, sparkle, mosaic, pop-art, warp, neon) - it basically combines the best features of PhotoShop, Fractal Design Painter and several other programs in a program with a highly intuitive and aesthetically pleasing interface. You HAVE to get this!

Ever notice how ICQ is becoming more and more bloated, memory-hungry and jam-packed full of utterly useless features these days? How about a tiny ICQ clone which is roughly 85k in size? Definitely worth grabbing this little prog - I hope they include an option to import your existing contact list at some stage.. *8-)

DELIPLAYER
music player
Okay. I've been waiting for this program to appear on the PC for almost ten years now, and it's finally here. This is the absolute ULTIMATE music player for the PC. It plays MOD/S3M/XM/IT modules, MP3s, C64 SIDs, over 160 (!) exotic music formats from the Amiga (incl. TFMX, SidMon, SoundMon etc), is skinnable, has some great visualisation plugins, has a brilliant, configurable playlist and player control window, 10-band EQ, supports ZIP/RAR/LHA/LZX/PowerPacker/XPK archives, click removal and dozens of other features. If you only download one player this decade, it's gotta be this. I can't recommend it highly enough for music enthusiasts. Also, head over to Exotica for loads of music files! *8-)

CompactDraw is a powerful and unique combination of vector and bitmap editing in one package. XFADER
graphic design util

I seem to have been getting into graphics progs a fair bit lately. This util is the best seamless tile creator I've yet found. You can create great desktop or webpage backgrounds - auto-generate clouds, wood, marble, fade any picture into a tileable unit, texturize, and even create stereographic images (cross your eyes to see a 3D backdrop!). I'm quite impressed. You will be, too.

(08-07-2000)
FLAGIMATION

Another graphic tool! Flagimation is a GIF animation program which creates 3D "flags". You can change stacks of parameters including lightsource, transparency and antialiasing. You can turn ANY picture into a flapping, waving or oscillating animated image.

What would you do if I told you I've found a remote desktop maintenance program which is better, faster, smaller and cheaper than PC-Anywhere, RemotelyPossible and every other commercial equivalent, and yet has a master executable of 250k and a host executable of 50k? This program is brilliant - go check out the webpage and be blown away.

FLASHGET
download manager
This download manager is uncannily similar to NetAnts, but has several more features. It incorporates Radiate advertising, but fortunately (unlike NetAnts!) you can register the software to remove the banners. It also incorporates FTPsearch functionality to find the closest/fastest mirror sites for your selected file. I'm surprised how similar it is to NetAnts (menus, language file names etc.) - perhaps the authors are involved in some sort of bizarre one-upmanship exercise? Anyway, after blowing away unnecessary files (other languages mainly) from the directories of both programs, I find that FlashGet has a slightly smaller HD footprint. I'm switching over. The latest and greatest in filesharing technology. Works similar to Napster, but doesn't operate from a main server; instead, your machine becomes an individual server, linked to other random machines. And you don't just get to download MP3s, this system works with ANY file extension. The idea is brilliant, it's a fantastic interface, and you'll typically link to a network with literally terabytes of freely-available files. Check this out, it's amazing.

This is a trojan scanner and remover which has been created specifically to get rid of the Aureate/Radiate advertising addins that have been included with so many programs these days. Basically, these bastard addins send private information about you, the consumer, back to the Aureate main server. So scan your system NOW with this handy (and TINY) util, it'll blow advert.dll and all associated files/registry entries away if you're contaminated.

Similar to Napster but better (in my opinion, as usual), this tiny little combo client/server will let you link to thousands of other random users' machines running on the 'Net in order to cross-share MP3, WAV, MPG, JPG, ZIP and all sorts of other files. Of course, it's mainly used for MP3s. It's becoming extremely popular and is well-worth checking out. It's only about 100k!

Download managers come and go, but rarely does one give the almighty GetRight a run for it's money. This is one such program. It has multithreaded download capabilities, a really nice-looking interface, even an "automatic" speed-limiting mode so it can properly share bandwidth when you're using it to download and you're websurfing simultaneously. Definitely worth checking out. Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.

v3.62 FINAL HAS BEEN RELEASED!
(14-03-2000)
Found this program while trying to wade through some weird Japanese shareware review sites. It's really cool because it saves your icon position on the desktop so if you muck things up (a screen res change, for example), it can restore everything to their original positions. More useful than it might first sound, I guarantee it. I use it religiously. The guy's homepage is cactus and "distribution has been stopped" so click the link on the left to do a direct download.
(14-03-2000)
This program claims to reduce the frequency of Win9x crashes by scanning all your hard drives looking for older/duplicate versions of OCX, DLL, VXD, VBX, DRV etc files, deleting and copying to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM as appropriate - and by jingo, my system does indeed appear to be running a lot stabler since I gave RJSFC a trial run. Maybe it's my imagination. At any rate, I reckon it's worth the download. Click HERE for a screenshot.

Brilliant for HTML editing too. A must-have. Click HERE for some screenshots.

Here are a couple of really nice OpenGL screensavers. Unfortunately the homepage is in Japanese, but the important stuff is easy to see. FireFlower is the best one (click HERE or HERE for screenshots)- it's a fireworks saver with heaps of options and looks even more realistic than Terry Welsh's Skyrocket. Then there's Particle Ring (click HERE or HERE for screenshots), less options but just as funky-looking. Freeware. New: Homepage has vanished! I'm linking now to 3DFILES' review..

This is a quick, handy tool for displaying the amount of available free space on your drive(s). There's heaps of this sort of program out there but this is the best one I've found. And it's freeware! Click HERE for a screenshot.
(30-01-2000)
I've been a fan of WinGate for quite a while, but this program has finally beaten it in the modemsharing stakes. First, it's TINY. Second, it has NAT, PAT, multi-client VPN access, a firewall, its own built-in mailserver (!), URL filtering, extensive logging/auditing, a DHCP/DNS server, proxy support with optimized caching, port mapping support, and a really neat administrator's frontend (a la WinGate's 'Gatekeeper'). This program seriously rocks.
(30-01-2000)
Similar to RamBooster (which was the most-downloaded freeware program of 1999 according to WebAttack), this utility can automatically "empty" RAM by flushing data to your swapfile, effectively making your computer run smoother. The difference between RamBooster and this program is that RAMPage is smaller and more efficient - what can I say? Download and try it. Click HERE for a screenshot. Freeware.
(30-01-2000)
This program takes a directory full of images and creates an HTML index file out of them. Lots of really nice options and it's quite userfriendly. Good for digital camera owners who want to put their piccies up on the Web. Click HERE for some screenshots.

Comprehensive multifunction network information utility. Allows you to ping, traceroute (the fast tracerouting looks cool!), generate DiG information, finger, scan/crawl websites, lookup hosts in world abuse and spam databases, and heaps more. Quite handy if you work in Internet technical support.. click HERE for a screenshot.
(23·12·99)
I had to include this! It's a huge collection of Atari XL/XE ripped music, plus a small player for Win9x. The music is real boppy and synth-sounding - but don't download this stuff unless you've been into computers long enough to remember the days of the C64. You've been warned.
(23·12·99)
This is a realtime taskmonitor which shows a running list of all system processes (including CPU usage per task - VERY handy for allowing you to kill rogue tasks) as well as other stuff like free resources, open file handles etc. A must-have. It's a good idea to assign it to a hotkey off your start menu, like I have. Click HERE for a screenshot.
(23·12·99)
This is a way cool freeware picture viewer/editor. It's got a batch process mode, does heaps of image editing stuff, transformations etc, plus it can even generate HTML pages full of thumbnailed and original-size pics. Utterly essential if you edit lots of pics a lot of the time. Or if you have a digital camera. Click HERE for a screenshot.

You can now edit pictures and create HTML thumbnail galleries, the program has plugins with direct support for several digital cameras, and it's lightning fast when building thumbnails and viewing pictures. Plus STACKS more. This is one of those programs that NOBODY should be without. Click HERE for screenshots.

(27·10·99)
The latest update of this extremely popular screensaver features multiple 3D card support (3DFX, OpenGL etc). Very cool-looking 3D outer space effects.
(27·10·99)
..and yet another screensaver! This is a direct download link. Skyrocket is the newest screensaver from Terry Welsh. author of a stack of awesome OpenGL savers which I have reviewed in a previous news article. Totally worth the download.
(27·10·99)
This is an extremely small yet comprehensive collection of network tools. Includes host lookup, ping, traceroute, raw connect, finger, whois, POP3 mailcheck and other functions - and it's a 64k executable! (when packed by ASPack) Click HERE for a screenshot.
(27·10·99)
A silly but fun desktop customisation util. ZoomOpen shows an animation effect when windows are open and/or closed. Many effects to choose from, and they all look quite neat. Bit of a waste of CPU power, but then again, that's what Win9x is all about, right? Freeware.
(27·10·99)
Very nice utility which simplifies and streamlines the process of refreshing webpage data via FTP. Used by TUCOWS to mirror all their sites. I use this religiously when updating Dhryland. Click HERE for a screenshot.

And when anyone asks you how you did it, tell 'em you learned it from Dhrystone. Click HERE for a screenshot.

(18·09·99)
This is a combo utility; a powerful personal firewall with interactive learning mode, and a webfilter with totally configurable ad/Java/ActiveX filtering capabilities. This is a total must-have tool; big thanks to Jon Tuckfield and his Super Bitchin' Cable Gurus for pointing me onto it! Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.
(18·09·99)
Damian Wilson told me about this small, fast email client. Executable's 500k (much less if packed with ASPack). Handles attachments and all sorts of stuff. A lot of features for such a small program.
(18·09·99)
Not to be confused with TClockEx, this awesome util from Japan customises your systray clock and start button/menu, PLUS can periodically synch time to an SNTP server. VERY well worth checking out! Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.
(18·09·99)
Forget bulky programs like LinkBot etc. This is a free, tiny, high-speed URL link checker. I use it all the time on Dhryland to scope for redundant links. Click HERE for a screenshot.
(18·09·99)
This is a nice replacement for the Windows CD Player. It's skinnable, has CDDB functionality, has a windowshade mode, mimimizes to the systray and rocks, basically. Click HERE for a screenshot.
(18·09·99)
A highly interesting page featuring highly interesting software tidbits. This link will take you to the redirector page.
NOTE: THIS SITE IS DEAD. I'll repost a new link when and if I find one.

A freeware DUN meter, similar to DUNMon but with enhancements such as connection scheduling & custom stats reporting etc. Good for those who might need to monitor their monthly download KB? Click HERE for a screenshot.

(24·07·99)
An excellent calendar, scheduler and reminder program. Handles recurring events, very nice on-screen layout, minimizes to systray and it's small. Click HERE for some screenshots.
(24·07·99)
Supercool FTP client with server-to-server transfer capability, MDI interface, URL-snatching, "Favourites" dropdown, neat-looking, customizable interface, plenty more.. plus, it's freeware! Click HERE for some screenshots.
(24·07·99)
You know, too many people refuse to use this because of cited "security" problems. But I've found it to be the BEST shared modem routing program available. Needs to be configured a fair bit before use, and that's probably why vacuum-heads tend to shun it. But it's worth it. Check the homepage for more info. Click HERE for a screenshot.
(24·07·99)
This is the best address-book util I've found. Configurable, quick-loading, imports comma-delimited data, customizable fields, per-entry reminders, even a diary and calendar! Worth checking out. Click HERE for a screenshot.

(30·05·99)
These have got to be the coolest, fully-functional shareware screensavers around. They are OpenGL-accelerated, so if you have 3DFX, at time of writing you're slightly disadvantaged *8-P Works brilliantly on Riva TNT cards.
(30·05·99)
This is an EXE/DLL/OCX compressor. Integrates into the shell, very high compression ratio and negligible decompression delay at runtime. Saves heaps of space. Click HERE for a screenshot.
(30·05·99)
Nifty FTP program with server-to-server transfer capabilities, caching, anti-idle, built-in ident server, (optional) Explorer-like tree layout, site stats logging and plenty more. Click HERE for a screenshot.
(30·05·99)
This is a Caller-ID util. Captures incoming CID (if your modem/phone line support it), has a fully-featured contacts database, per-caller custom ringtone/greeting, answering machine mode, nice on-screen layout and it's SMALL. Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.
(30·05·99)
AWESOME local proxy for your browser which can: kill banners, popup windows, statusbar scrollers, remove counters,, DHTML, embedded music, hide referrer fields, work through a cascaded proxy and much more. Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.

(17·05·99)
This is a really cool miniature clock application with built-in scheduler, multi-timezone support, alarms/reminders, calendar, sys-info components and more. And it ain't written in VB! Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.
(17·05·99)
WINSYSTEM-98
This wass a direct download but I removed it. Tiny system-monitor tool; CPU usage, DUN monitor, total RAM/GDI resources, motherboard temperature, network stats and more. Top download at softseek.com! Click HERE or HERE for screenshots. The authors have advised me that there will be NO FURTHER VERSIONS of this program, which is unfortunate.

My girlfriend thinks that this is the "best program ever". It's a systray-resident task monitor program. Works VERY well - allows you to kill rogue tasks, change their priority, edit a program's window dimensions directly, and it even does screen captures. A highly recommended download. Sick of WinAMP? Here's an alternative MP3 player which is actually pretty good. It works very well, looks nice and doesn't chew up vast amounts of CPU power. This is definitely my MP3 player of choice. Click HERE for a screenshot. Try the music fade in/out option, it rules!
Apollo has a new homepage! But in case it disappears again, here's a |direct download| to the latest version (Apollo37g), courtesy Dhryland!

Also, the author has sadly indicated that he does not want to carry on the burden of programming Apollo. Pity.

This is a freeware application which monitors the throughput of your Dial-Up Networking connection. Very nice display, either traditional percentage/BPS display or a funky graphical readout. Another Big Pond support favourite. Click HERE or HERE for screenshots.
Everyone seems to be using Outlook Express these days. You SHEEP! Grab this program, it absolutely rocks. It's a multiple-account, multithreaded email application. It does everything: rich text formatting, drag-and-drop between folders and accounts, send/receive concurrently while still reading your mail, fast preview pane, and it incorporates PGP encryption! Two words - get it.
Now here's a rather nice program. It spices up your boring systray clock - now you can change the text colour, background colour, font, and add in the day and date. Totally customisable formatting. System load/memory display. Eats almost zero CPU time. Click HERE for a screenshot.
There's been a million POP3 email checkers that have come out lately. This one is the best. It supports multiple POP3 accounts, pop-up notification window, can be configured to launch your main email client, has a quick-preview mode and it's just under 30k in size!!
